#008 — TS KAHUNA
In the realm of musical exploration, the journey of a DJ often mirrors the diverse and dynamic nature of their sonic ventures. In this mix, TS Kahuna goes the extra mile to encapsulate one year of personal evolution and dancefloor resonance. Recorded in September 2023, after a six-month long process that went into this three-channel, 130 something BPM mix for the club, mixing the essence of old-school grooves with a contemporary selection of tracks. A sonic carpet of snares and percussions, trippy grooves in a constant quest to defy genre constraints.
This mix isn't your average one-hour session. It's been a half-year struggle, a dance between four decks and countless tracks, trying to define something that felt my own while exploring a new way of mixing. After spending more time in clubs this past year, I felt the need to create a mid-tempo mix with a groove that harkens back to the old days. The first take sounded good, but it lacked that personal touch. I wanted to reach a peak time level of intensity, but with tracks that are more subtle, trippy, and less in your face than what I am used to. The grind on the dancefloor, especially at our own Floor Clearance night last spring with Piezo playing 4 decks, layed a huge role in molding the vibe.
So here it is, my imperfect take on a 4 decks, mid tempo, high intensity club mix - 21 tracks in an hour, with 2 or 3 tracks playing at all times, still trying to remain faithful to my eclectic selections spanning across genres and diverse rhythmic patterns.
I hope some people will dance to this in their living rooms or maybe before their shift at some club around the city.
Keepin' it short and sweet—call me an ADHD DJ. I’m all over the place, and I love it that way. I refuse to be boxed into a genre because there's just too much good music out there. My radio project, Spazio Aperto, is a testament to that: trying to bridge different points in the electronic music universe in a personal way.
From ambient to drum and bass, downtempo to techno, it's a mixed bag.
Yet, my heart beats for percussions—polyrhythms, snappy hi-hats, and groovy basslines it’s what really makes me tip and what I want to keep as my main style identifier. Yet, I’m constantly on a journey…Moving from being a Radio DJ from my living room to playing more into clubs in the last couple of years, I started to learn how to exchange energy with the crowd, so my style is definitely evolving towards something more functional. I try to bridge the chasm between closed-eyes solitary mental journeys and sweaty collective dancefloor euphoria with mixed genres selections. A little for the brain, a lot for the feet, and viceversa. I’m really enjoying this journey!
Sooo… Very Big things! I am taking a break from DJing, and channelling all of my energy on a project that has been keeping me up at night for the past 4 months, and that I have been dreaming of for years… Together with one of my best friends, we are starting a new community radio and panini bar, that will be broadcasting every Saturday afternoon and evening from Baggen. It’s going to be called Radio Panini, and our goal with this is to provide a platform for a new community of people from different walks in life to come together through the power of music and food.
This time is not about me, but more about how can I put my experience and passion at the service of the kaleidoscopic and thriving Danish creative community.
If anyone here is interested in knowing more or tag along in the journey, I am very much looking forward to connect, and they can reach out at hello@radiopanini.com or on our instagram page.
Apart from Radio Panini, I am still wearing the promoter clothes with my club night Floor Clearance I run with Studio Natura(some big nights and international collaborations lining up for 2024) and as a radio host with Spazio Aperto, my now almost 5 years old show, currently hosted on Milan Radio Raheem, that I co-run with Prince of Whales.
