#012 — HAKEEM

“HAKEEM’s loose, genre-bending style is a discovery journey into deep soulful sounds across the spectrum. His crate digging loot always spawns the forgotten classic, the timeless nugget or that familiar break.”

Essentially, I just tried to create a mix that had a classy feel to it, without too many bells and whistles. It was important to me to stay at an approachable tempo, and have an interesting selection so that the mix is easy on the ear while you go about your day listening to it.

I pieced together a selection of classic and more contemporary household names and tracks from the 90s until as recently as this summer, so it’s a whole spectrum, but I really think it comes full circle. Overall, I’d say the mix has a very groovy progressive house feel to it. Nevertheless, expect a few spicy incursions into bouncy, cheeky and trippy moments for good measure.

Haha! The one million dollar question! As a DJ, I like to think I’m versatile and have a broad range, focusing more on what the occasion asks for than having a pre-established plan. I try to keep things interesting by playing diverse and varied sets with incursions into bouncy house, breaks, left-field techno and bass music.

My origin story is one of coincidences… The years as a dancer ended up giving me the final push I needed to start playing by bringing me closer to my really good friend Marcin, whom I had known for years at the time. Together with his housemate, they had an incredible music studio in their living room: from drum machines and synths, to guitars and records, a top notch DJ setup, a whole thing… It all seemed very fascinating and made me realize how little I knew about so many aspects of dance music. As we spent more and more time together, I realized that even though I didn’t know much, learning about it brought me a lot of joy.

From there, it kind of took on a life of its own: getting a first set up eventually spiraled into playing at house parties with friends, volunteering everywhere I could in the local scene, leading to first events as a DJ & promoter, and creating my former collective Second Nature.

More events, more DJing and more volunteering on, and that brings us to last year, when I had the privilege to start hosting Spin Cycle, my uplifting house-focused residency at Drift Radio and Bubbling Inside, another residency on Komrad, where I focus on deeper, more changeling and obscure parts of my sound. That was also when I started working at Drift Radio doing pretty much whatever was needed, which I must say has really been a wonderfully rewarding learning experience as we host so many different artists, radio days and events. Generally speaking, I get a lot of fulfillment from being involved in different projects and contribute towards giving something back. So, I try to stay curious and keep myself in the loop.

Right now, I’m trying to stay open for adventures without overcommitting. That said, both my residencies Spin Cycle at Drift Radio and Bubbling Inside on Komrad are becoming club nights at Den Anden Side and Jolene, respectively. So, I’m looking forward to burrowing in and keep exploring the boundaries of these projects while collaborating with DJs and artists I truly admire.
