#014 — BALTZA
Polish-born, Copenhagen-based DJ, organiser & radio host. Baltza is driven by community-focused initiatives aiming to create & facilitate spaces intersecting music and various forms of social activism. Striving to create dance floor flashes of energizing aura, joy, and togetherness, Baltza is obsessed with groovy bass lines, rolling kicks, heartfelt vocal samples & cheeky hi-hats. With a soft spot for 90s rave sound & 2000s dance and R'n'B edits, their sets blend house, electro, breaks, bass, hard groove, and UK garage, complemented by percussive and progressive sounds, trailing an uplifting, irresistibly fun, sassy, and occasionally melancholic ride.
Inspired by the essence of early club culture and passion for sharing music, Baltza is a part of Tiny House Club (a community-oriented DJ duo and party concept on a mission to bring the grooviest sounds to small, intimate spaces), and BASH IS BACK (a set of parties, radio takeovers & DYI events dedicated to highlighting queer, non-binary, trans and intersex artists in nightlife). Additionally, they host a monthly show on Black Rhino Radio called Groove Call.
The intention behind the mix was to showcase sounds and sonic elements that make me tickle the most. I packed the set with my all-time favorites and most recent findings that I can’t get out of my head. As per usual, it’s a very groovy ride with a tad bit of sass and sexiness, lots of uplifting, euphoric energy, and a true yearning to lose yourself in the music.
I am a big ball of energy & emotions - in life and behind the decks, and I hope to think that it translates into my sets. Growing up I listened to anything from west coast rap, rnb, soul, and pop, to psychedelic rock, hardcore breakbeat, and euro dance. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a DJ, but oh boy, trying to get your hands on any resources in the early 2000s as a non-male, queer kid in Eastern Europe was impossible. However, the desire prevailed and pushed me to find a community years later that inspired me and made me feel welcome.
I’d say that what shapes me as a DJ is my deep love for distinct basslines, heartfelt, goosebump-inducing vocals, and a shitton of hi-hats. I have a soft spot for whistles & cowbells too. But it’s not just the music though - what drives me the most is the possibility of connecting with people, creating a community where folks can express themselves freely, and contributing to building a more integral, caring, and anti-capitalist scene.
I strive for my music to let folks genuinely connect with themselves and each other, forging dancefloor moments filled with fun, joy, pleasure, and (hopefully) a tad bit of unapologetic salaciousness too.
When it comes to my mixing style, it’s pretty obvious I am a slut for long sequencing and looping, and I am a big fan of challenging myself and love to explore different techniques. Quite often, I like to build suspense and anticipation by fiddling with EQs and filters.
A bunch of fun stuff! I’ll be having a debut gig in my home country at the end of April, closing a queer party concept after an incredible NY DJ, and I am super stoked about it. Otherwise, I have a couple of very cool collabs in the pipeline with my side project BASH IS BACK, with community collectives from Berlin and the UK.
