#014 — MILO MAKUA
Pushing forward with an eye to the the liberatory nature of both underground music and the myriad cultures from which it is linked, Milo Makua - the project of Copenhagen’s Camilla Konstantin - exhibits a subtle diversity in touch. From techno’s multitudes they display an affinity for the headsier edges of the enchanted and the deep. Yielding at times to experimental urges whilst remaining firmly in step with the fundamentalist drive of techno, there is an art here, one which distills the purist essences of early techno with more modern textural and rhythmic complexity.
Milo’s contributions to community and culture - from the small-cap Urtelyst Festival to conceptual nights such as ‘Postyr’ and ‘Looney Tunes’ - are well numbered. An approach defined by thinking forward, moving forward, not through music solely as inidvidual expression but as a communal means from which to reach beyond the structural limits of a life bound by normative and systemic rigidity. These are collective liberatory essences, of a type expressed through an enchanting aesthetic rawness.
The idea behind this mix was to showcase the music I’ve been collecting over time—tracks that I don’t usually play at my gigs. It’s a presentation of what I’ve been enjoying over the past year, with a strong sense of melancholy running through it.
I wanted to blend different genres and moods while keeping it unpredictable—something that keeps the listener engaged, never quite knowing what’s coming next!
I’d describe myself as a DJ with no strict boundaries - I play what excites me in the moment. While many might associate me with techno sets, I’ve always prioritized artistic freedom over sticking to a single sound. My love for music runs deep, and I never want to limit myself, even if that means keeping people on their toes.
My journey started on the dancefloor as a teenager, completely immersed in the energy of club culture. In 2016, I got my hands on a CDJ-800 thanks to my partner who taught me the basics, with his huge collection of psytrance CD's.
From there, I dove into everything from trance to ambient, techno, and house.
There’s a lot to look forward to! My new collective, Postyr, kicked off this year with two parties, and we’ve got our third one coming up in September.
These have been really special nights, with a vibe on the floor I’ve been missing a bit in Copenhagen. I’m dreaming of seeing more hypnotic techno events blossom here. Sometimes I feel like I need to travel abroad to find a dance floor that feels raw and gives space for a more intense, introverted dance experience, but I think we’ve managed to create that feeling with our parties so far, and I’m excited to see what the future brings!
Lately, I’ve also been focusing on finding a more sustainable way to be part of the nightlife scene. It’s been a learning process, especially as I had to let go of some old habits. Practicing sobriety has helped me reconnect with my love for music in a much more honest way, and I’m curious to see how my relationship to the club scene will evolve from here.
